Kelowna Pickleball Tournament May 19 - 20, 2012

Grant and Andrew from Abbotsford won Silver medals in Competitive Mens Doubles at Kelowna's tournament. Saturday, May 19: Mens and Womens competitive and Recreational Doubles. Sunday May 20 :Competitive Mixed Doubles - 20 teams, Recreational Mixed Doubles 8 teams. Dave and his Partner Bill Reid won the Recreational Mens Doubles bronze medals. The format was Double Elimination, 2 games out of 3 (games to 11, win by 1) in the Upper bracket and 1 game to 15 in the Lower bracket. Each game is refereed. Winners are supposed to be the referees but there were at least 6 volunteer referees called in including Dave referred a few games. On Saturday, I was getting pretty tired by 5 pm (not used to getting up at 6 am) being the line judge for the last 6 games for Grant and Andrew's semi-final and final Gold medal matches. Grant was so exhausted after playing 17 games to reach the final, lying down on the floor to rest, I was a bit worried because I don't know first aid. I guess it was a lot of pressure to win when the games were so close. On Sunday, the Competitive Mixed doubles were still not finished by 2 pm and we decided to go back to the hotel to rest because it was too tiring standing and waiting for two days. We stayed at the Best Western Plus Wine Country Hotel and the service was marvellous, free breakfast which included everything from bacon and eggs, waffles, cereal, yoghurt, muffins etc. Dave and I attended the Pickleball Canada Annual General Meeting at that hotel on May 18.

50 Players on 8 Courts, 20 New Players at ARC

Today there were about 50 players on 8 courts. Both Gym 1 and Gym 2 were full and had about 18 players waiting to play. During the past two months, we have had about 20 new players at ARC. Some new players are Henry, Don, Anne, Ralph, Gordon, Denise, Faye, Art, Linda, and many others. Some of them like Janet and Jennifer attended the Pickleball Orientation and learned how to serve properly. A lot of new players are serving like tennis groundstroke instead of the upward serving motion below the waist. We had about 25 players at snack time, Janet and Jennifer provided the delicious fruit, cake and cookies. So nice to see John and Beryl from South Surrey and Ron, Vi and their son Brian from Lynden, WA. Brian has not played pickleball since he was a kid but he played extremely well.
