Pickleball Canada 2013 Year in Review

As we move towards the end of 2013, Pickleball Canada is very pleased with the great progress we have made so far this year. Our membership numbers have reached over 700. There is a substantial increase in the number of players, clubs and groups, tournaments, Ambassadors, indoor and outdoor courts, start-ups and Places to Play in Canada.

The growth of pickleball in Canada and the United States is unprecedented. Every month we receive many emails from groups that are starting up in every corner of the country. PCO promotes good sportsmanship, supports tournaments and recreational play, and helps with the formation of new groups across Canada.

Pickleball Canada has successfully sanctioned four tournaments this year. All PCO sanctioned tournaments use IFP Rules. Winners of sanctioned tournaments will receive PCO Tournament Points. Pickleball Canada will announce the 2013 top PCO Tournament Points players at the end of each year.

PCO offers many member benefits: website, newsletters, places to play, ambassadors, tournaments, tournament points, player ratings, rules and policies, advertising, pickleball updates, information, advice and support for players, clubs, tournaments, start ups, liability insurance for sanctioned tournaments, news and much more.....If you are not a member or need to re-join, please visit www.pickleballcanada.org

Congratulations to the top Canadian women's player Luba Zhekhovskaya (Surrey, BC) winning the GOLD Medal in Open Mixed Doubles (this event had 89 teams in 4 groups) with Michael Gates (CA) in the 2013 USAPA Nationals.  Luba also won a Silver medal in 50+ Mixed Doubles with Mark Friedenberg and a Bronze medal in 35+ Women's Doubles with Gigi LeMaster.  Luba is the top women's player in Canada!!!

4rd Day of 2013 USAPA Nationals

Today is the 4th day of 2013 USAPA Nationals in AZ.  Men's Singles and Women's Singles 19+, 35+, 50+, 56+, 60+, 65+, 70+, 75+, 80+, 85+ are playing today.  644 players from the USA, Canada and as far as Netherlands are competing in this largest National Pickleball Tournament.  You can watch the top players of the world playing their top notch matches.  Some exciting matches to watch are coming up:
Friday Nov 15 - 76 teams in Open Men's Doubles and 43 teams in Open Women's Doubles 
Saturday Nov 16 -  92 teams in Open Mixed doubles

2013 USAPA National Tournament Nov 11-17, 2013

2013 USAPA National Tournament 11/11/13 - 11/17/13 Sun City Festival, Buckeye, AZ  http://www.pickleballtournaments.com/cinfo.pl?tid=162  Six hundred forty-four USAPA members from 39 states and as far away as Canada and the Netherlands will converge on Sun City Festival in Buckeye, Arizona November 11-17 for the USAPA National Tournament. Registration for this year’s event reached an all-time high; Nationals V will be the largest tournament in the history of the sport. 

Canadian players include: John Savoy, Stewart Mcwilliam, Harold Osbourne, Laura & Mike Schwarz, Mike Epp, Dave Touchet, Theresa Orcutt, Dan and Brenda Jmaeff, SJ Lehman, Carol Haworth, Luba Zhekhovskaya, Nancy Stern.  We wish everyone traveling to Arizona a safe trip and the very best of luck to all participants of 2013 USAPA National Tournament.

Mike Carter from Oliver, B.C. did an outstanding job of singing both the Canadian and American National Anthems on both days at the Slamma Jamma.  Many more Canadian players are expected to make the trip for next years tournaments at the HUB. It would be wonderful to see a play off between the top American and Canadian teams.
